DETROIT — Brennan Boesch won’t exactly campaign for the spot in the lineup behind Miguel Cabrera, but make no mistake, he wants it.
Boesch told media members Thursday during the team’s annual Winter Caravan that he is open to hitting anywhere in the lineup, but would welcome an opportunity to hit fourth or fifth behind Cabrera.
“That spot is definitely a different spot with Miguel being the hitter he is,” Boesch said. “I think it’s almost an honor to be put there, so if my name is called then I’ll be up to the challenge and embrace it.”
Boesch should receive strong consideration from Leyland, as the 26-year-old left-handed hitter has since fully recovered from a right thumb injury that cut his 2011 season short. Boesch, who hit behind Cabrera two seasons ago, batted .306 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI before the All-Star break last season.
